Double Your Impact

Dear judi,
There are only 3 days left to double your impact and help us reach our $50,000 goal.

Donate by August 2, and every dollar you give will be matched.
Have you heard the news? Thanks to a friend and generous donor, every dollar you give to the Komen Advocacy Alliance by August 2 will be doubled.
So far Komen advocates have contributed $10,000, but we still have a long way to go if we're going to take full advantage of this special matching gift offer by reaching our $50,000 goal – and we only have 3 days left to do it!
Donate by August 2 to help make sure Congress is on our side in the fight against cancer, and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar!
As we speak, Congress is debating health care reform, which will have a significant effect on breast cancer patients and survivors.
The time is now to close the gap in access to cancer care for ALL Americans. That's why we continue building our grassroots campaign to make sure policymakers on Capitol Hill, and across the country, consider the needs of cancer patients as they reform our health care system.
But in order for us to continue our work on this, and other, cancer priorities, we need YOUR support!
Click here to double your impact TODAY.
1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The disease costs the U.S. $228 billion each year in medical costs and lost productivity, but even worse is the physical and emotional toll it takes on patients and their families.
That's why the government must invest in prevention and early detection services and ensure that every American has access to high-quality insurance, even those with a "pre-existing" condition like cancer. Out-of-pocket expenses must be limited because a family should not have to use their life savings to save a mother's life because she has breast cancer.
Health reform will get us one step closer to our goal of a world without breast cancer. Decisions are being made right now in Washington, D.C. We can make an impact, but to do so, we need YOUR help, judi.
Make a donation by August 2, and watch your dollars go twice as far in the fight against breast cancer.
Thank you for backing us in this effort. Your generous support makes our work possible.
Sincerely,
Ambassador Nancy G. BrinkerFounding Chair, Susan G. Komen for the Cure®Board Chair, Komen Advocacy Alliance

Fish

Don't you just love the goldfish on the side of the post? if you click & move your mouse around, the clicks leave food for the fish. It's somewhat calming & peaceful to watch them move about.
Kind of like giving--don't you feel better when you give of yourself? by helping children, old people, people who are sick, people who have lost everything, I bet there's a little bit of you patting yourself on your back after doing a good deed.
So do a good deed today--whether it's donating to or registering for RFTC, or picking up a book someone dropped--and I bet you'll be walking a little bit taller.

Investing

$1 = $2!
That's right, for the next six days, your donation will go twice as far towards our $50,000 goal.

Somewhere, right now, a woman is learning that she has breast cancer. Every three minutes a woman is diagnosed and every 13 minutes a woman dies from the disease. Think about that: 1 woman every 3 minutes.
Unfortunately, cancer patients face many obstacles to getting the potentially life-saving care they need. At the same time, budget-strapped governments have put critical safety-net cancer programs at risk. We need your help to change all this.
And now, you have the opportunity to make double the impact.
If you invest in change today with a donation towards our advocacy efforts, your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar.
That's right – an extraordinary donor has offered to match every cent you give, up to $50,000 in matched donations, which means:
If you give $50, we'll get $100 that could pay for phone calls to Congress asking legislators to support key cancer priorities.
If you give $75, we'll get $150 that could subsidize an ad to get the word out about an important issue like health care reform, or build a groundswell of support for greater investment in cancer research and treatment services.
If you give $100, we'll get $200 that could put a volunteer on the ground to deliver, in person, the cancer priorities YOU want Congress to address.
In order to maximize this opportunity, our goal is to raise $50,000 by August 2, which will provide a $100,000 foundation for us to build upon. Together we can get there. Together we can make a real impact. Click here to donate today!
This is an important moment. Congress is currently debating health care reform, which will have a significant effect on breast cancer patients and survivors. Our voice must be heard to ensure Congress considers cancer in its deliberations.
That's why the Komen Advocacy Alliance is launching a grassroots campaign to ensure policymakers on Capitol Hill and across the country are committed to ensuring all Americans have access to affordable and high quality health care.
We're asking Congress to support early detection services that will expand access to cancer care for underserved populations, help limit out-of-pocket costs for cancer patients, and ensure access to high-quality insurance for all – even those with a "pre-existing" condition like cancer.
Please help support our work on this, and other, cancer priorities – and remember, this special matching gift opportunity to double your donation ends on August 2!
Thank you for all that you do. Together we can one day end the suffering and death caused by cancer.
Sincerely,
Ambassador Nancy G. BrinkerFounding Chair, Susan G. Komen for the Cure®Board Chair, Komen Advocacy Alliance

7-21-09 meeting summary.

Mornin' y'all! I want to thank everyone who came to the Team meeting yesterday afternoon. We had a great turnout--thank you!
I'm just going to offer a summary of what we went over. (if you weren't there, you missed chocolate AND cookies!)

Race Day is October 17, 2009 in downtown Little Rock. This is the 16th year for the Arkansas affiliate's race--the "Sweet 16".
Online registration fees are $26 (Komen will send your race packet directly to your house).
Offline fees are $25. If you prefer offline, you will need to turn in your registration forms and money to either Wendy or me.
TEAM DEADLINE: August 25th. This will ensure that everyone gets their correct shirt sizes, and if there are any problems we can get them taken care of early.

New features this year for Komen:
KATV Kids for the Cure--your children can get their own specially designed tees if they are registered for the Papa John/KATV Family Fun Walk/Run. Register early--they only ordered 3,000 of the kids' shirts. Otherwise children will get an adults shirt.
Hank's Fine Furniture Pajamaware (formerly Spirit Runner)--
You can still participate by registering, getting a tee shirt, and then on Race Day, staying home all snug in your pjs! Perfect for those night owls who have a hard time rising early.

Wendy & I would like to do a new team tee shirt--I have the old one and an example of the new colors both at my desk if you would like to see them. The price should be about $9.25 per shirt. I will post new details about the tee shirts after I talk to the people at Image One.

Also, we would like the team to go as a group to the PASTA PARTY. The new location for the party this year is at Dickey Stephens Park. Food will be catered by Macaroni Grill; there will be entertainment by The Rockets; and a silent auction will be held. I've been to the Pasta Party in the past--the food is good, it's a fun evening, and it will get you pumped up for the Race the next day. Tickets are $20 each.

Komen is also looking for volunteers to be the "entertainment" along the route. so, if your guys will be lining the sidewalks for 3 Miles of Men-see if they will dress up, sing, dance, do yoga, cheer, whatever their special talents may be, and help encourage the Racers as we go the distance. I have the contact info if you know of anyone who will be willing to volunteer.

Race Space--will open October 2 - October 16th at the Pleasant Ridge Shopping Center (same as last year). You can volunteer anytime then, but we also would like to volunteer a couple of days as a team. (you don't have to work both days-we just do 2 so if you can't work 1 of the days, you can work the other.) Volunteer duties usually include stuffing registration bags, folding shirts, registering folks for the race, ringing up sales in the boutique, data entry, all sorts of interesting things. So be thinking of a Tuesday or Thursday in October when you would be able to volunteer.
We also will be meeting on Race Day at our usual spot--underneath the Regions bank sign on 4th & Broadway. 7:30 a.m. sharp!
Also--after the race, there will be several opportunities for you to lunch for a good cause! Put a Fork in It-- several restaurants will donate portions of their proceeds to Komen if you go eat at their establishment on Race Day. Check out the listings at www.komenarkansas.org or, if you're too pooped to drive anywhere after the race, Christ Episcopal's men will cook breakfast for the ladies. I went last year--it was delish! the folks were warm & welcoming (and they even had mimosas!) They do need to know in advance if you will be attending, so let Cathy Howser know ASAP. Last, but not least, Cafe 6k will be offered again by the Little Rock Junior League at 9a.m. Check out their website at www.jllr.org for more details.
Finally, a *BIG* thank you for being a Bookend team member! You are most appreciated for your time, money, and help. Breast cancer will not go away on its own, and because of YOU-- many lives have been changed for the better.

89 days & counting

Hey Bookends--
Wendy & I attended the Team Captains' party yesterday. They changed up the format a bit--they had booths all around the room, and you could go around to get information about the different Komen events.
Are you ready??? We are just excited about the Race this year!
They've added a few new events this year:
Kids for the Cure--the first 3,000 children who are registered get their own kids' shirts this year. So if you are doing the Papa John's Family Fun Walk with your family, register early so your children can get their very own shirts!
Fitness Program for Race for the Cure--the 1st 500 registrants can participate in a 6 week training program before the race.
Pajamaware--formerly the "Spirit Runner". You can stay at home in your jammies on Race Day!
There is so much information to pass on, but we'll discuss it all in our Team Meeting.
Looking forward to Winning this Race with you all!
