reminders! reminders!

Hello my lovely Pink Racers!

Just a little reminder that ONE week from today, August 28th, (which is also Pay Day! YEAH!)
is the Registration Deadline for both the Race for the Cure and ordering team tee shirts.

Registration for the Race:
$26 for online registration; Komen will send your tee & race packet directly to your house.
Even if you can't be there on Race Day, you can still register and get your Komen shirt and be Pajamaware!
$25 offline registration; you will need to fill out and SIGN a registration form, and give it to either me or Wendy, along with your money.

Ordering Team Tee Shirts:
Prices are as follows for the team shirts (these are separate shirts from those you will get from Komen):
Sizes S - XL: $9.25 + tax (about $10)
2XL: $10.25 + tax (about $11)
3XL: $11.25 + tax (about $12)
4XL: $12.25 + tax (about $13)
We need to have a minimum order of 24 shirts to get these prices; so far we have about 20 orders.

If you don't think you can register for the race, but would like just the team shirt, we will still take your tee shirt order!
If you don't want a team tee shirt, but want to just register for the race, we will still be happy to take your $$ as well!

If you are paying by check, we will need separate checks for these, as the team tee shirts are being purchased from Image One, a company approved by the local Komen affiliate.

Remember, if you have *any* questions, Wendy & I will be happy to help get answers for you.

OOH, and don't forget, if you want to register for the FREE fitness program, I think there is still time! When you register online you will see the link for registering for the program. That will start September 7th (Labor Day) at 6:30pm at War Memorial Stadium.
Go BOOKENDS!!!

Thanks so much!
Pinkingly yours,
Judi & Wendy

Drug 'attacks cancer stem cells'

Some 16,000 chemicals were tested by researchers
A compound that appears to target the master cells which help breast cancers grow and spread has been discovered by US scientists.
In tests in mice, salinomycin killed breast cancer stem cells far more effectively than some existing drugs, and slowed tumour growth.
The drug, a farm antibiotic, has yet to be tested in humans, the journal Cell reports.
But UK experts warned a human version could be some years away.
This is one of the biggest advances we have seen this year in this area of research
Dr John StinglCancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute
The reasons why, even following powerful chemotherapy, some cancers can grow back, are not fully understood.
Many scientists believe a key role lies with stem cells, which can be resistant to conventional chemotherapy, remaining to 'seed' new tumours and drive their growth.
The drug's potential was identified by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who tested 16,000 existing chemical compounds against breast cancer stem cells in the laboratory.
Those which performed the best were then tried in mice, and compared to existing drugs such as paclitaxel.
Salinomycin appeared to be 100 times better at killing the cells in a test tube, and treated cells were much less likely to start new tumours when injected into mice.
When given to mice with tumours, the growth of the cancer slowed.
However, the researchers stressed that it was too early to know if similar successes could be achieved in human cancer patients.
"Many therapies kill the bulk of a tumour only to see it regrow," said Professor Eric Lander, from MIT."This raises the prospect of new kinds of anti-cancer therapies."
'Very early research'
Dr John Stingl, group leader in mammary stem cell biology at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute, said: "This is one of the biggest advances we have seen this year in this area of research. These scientists have demonstrated that it's possible to selectively target the rare cancer stem cells that drive tumour growth.
"This research also introduces a completely new way of identifying cancer drugs. The challenge for the future is to bring this class of drugs to the clinic and to identify the patients that are likely to respond to them."
Dr Alexis Willett, head of policy at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, added: "There is evidence that stem cells may enable breast cancers to form and grow.
"This research provides a clue as how to identify these cells and how they might be targeted and destroyed. "It's important to remember that this is very early research and it will be some time before it is clear whether this leads to an effective breast cancer treatment."

congratulations!

Dear judi,

Congratulations, Nancy, on a well deserved honor!
I wanted to share with you an exciting announcement that once again demonstrates the leadership of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in the global battle against breast cancer.
Yesterday, our founder, Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, was honored at a White House reception, where she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom – our nation's highest civilian honor.
Nancy joined a prestigious group of medal honorees that includes Desmond Tutu, Senator Edward Kennedy, and physicist Stephen Hawking.
This honor, coupled with Nancy's appointment by the World Health Organization as an Ambassador for Cancer Control, is an extraordinary recognition of Komen for the Cure's impact across the country and around the world. In just one generation, Nancy's leadership and vision has enabled Komen to invest more than $1.3 billion into research, education and community health programs across the United States and beyond our borders.
These investments have brought new treatments, better outcomes and better support for millions of women and men in the United States facing a breast cancer diagnosis.
Around the world, almost a decade of Komen's work with governments and health leaders is bearing fruit in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa – low and middle-income areas of the world where the need is very great and resources for women are very scarce.
Nancy Brinker will be undertaking significant cancer challenges in her role with the World Health Organization. Fortunately, 27 years doing the tough work, at the forefront of the breast cancer movement, has prepared her – and Komen – for the challenges ahead.
Regards,
Hala ModdelmogSusan G. Komen for the Cure® Advocacy Alliance
