interesting article

Wanda brought this article to my attention; I'll post it up on the screen by my desk, and I think she is posting one in the staff room.
The article is advice on beating breast cancer, with information from Dr. Suzanne Klimberg, medical advisor for Komen Arkansas.

What should you do if you find a lump?
Dr. Klimberg advises:
*Get a complete diagnosis before you go to the operating room; most people just need a needle biopsy.
*Get a second opinion.
*Use a surgeon who does intra-operative ultrasounds.
*Ask your doctor a procedure called eRFA.
*If you need radiation, ask about something called partial breast irradiation.
*Learn about the latest procedures & advancements for breast cancer.
*Get enough Vitamin D. Not only does it reduce your risk of breast cancer, but you also strengthen your bones.
*Be a pioneer and volunteer for research. Not only will you benefit from the latest techniques, but future patients will benefit from your participation as well.
To read the whole article, stop by my desk or look for it on staff bulletin board.
And, I'd also like to add, don't panic; keep a positive attitude--and having faith in the Man Upstairs also helps big time! Just remember you are not alone--many others have gone through this, so reach out to others--they'll gladly help you through this.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Well, I am officially old.
I saw this morning that the girl who was the inspiration behind the Beatles' song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", has died. Lucy O'Donnell Vodden, 46, was a kindergarten classmate of John Lennon's son, Julian. Julian went home from school one day with a drawing and told his dad, "that's Lucy in the sky with diamonds."
Lucy had Lupus, and although she put up a fierce fight, it finally overtook her tired soul, and on Monday she went on to be a diamond in the sky.
Don't you wish we didn't have to worry about diseases such as lupus, or cancer? If you'd like to help, the Komen crew has a "Because I Care" fundraiser that also helps further cancer research. For those of you who gave this year when you registered online, a *big* Thank You! For those of you who haven't given, please consider donating either to Komen, the American Cancer society, or maybe Lou Gehrig's disease, or even for Lupus. By giving what you can, you will certainly be, for those dealing with sickness & ill health, a diamond in the sky.

men!

on the way to work this morning, The Race Chair, Ellen Kreth & the 3 Miles of Men chair Anthony Lucas were on 94.1 talking up the 3 Miles of Men portion of the Race for the Cure. So I'm passing the word along--git your men involved!!

Three Miles of Men® registrants…
You will receive a complimentary 3 Miles of Men t-shirt.
You are invited to the 4th Annual 3 MOM Tailgate Party, Friday, October 9, 5-7 PM, at Diamond Bear Brewery. Prizes, music, free beer and Larry’s Pizza for all 3 MOM registrants!
Complimentary breakfast provided by Capitol Smokehouse and Grill on race morning, to the first 100 people to arrive at the 3 MOM tent on the corner of Capital and Izard (parking lot next to Capitol Smokehouse and Grill).

And, they also need volunteers to be "entertainment" to cheer on the Race participants Oct. 17th. So if your man doesn't want to register for 3 Miles of Men, he can still come down & cheer everyone on. Just remind him that this is the one time you will officially permit him to watch 45,000 women all at once!

They can use the same registration form that is online, or they can register at the Race Space when it opens.
October 17th is coming up fast--are you ready to win your race?

Nuns

You all should say "thank you" to the good Sisters of Mercy, Sister Beatrice & Sister Lucille.
If it hadn't been for the nuns bending over us at St. Patrick's school with their rulers, I wouldn't have learned to spell, and if I hadn't learned to spell, then come Oct. 17th, you all would have been walking the streets of Little Rock with tee shirts that said "A-R-K-A-S-N-A-S State Library" on them.
Wendy and I went over to pick up the team tee shirts after work yesterday, and I must say, they do look awesome! But there was that one teeny tiny error on it. ARKASNAS. Wendy & I didn't think that would have been great publicity for the library, so we said, "no, thank you."
So, I am sad to report that we have no shirts to hand out to you today. But, they are going to re-do our shirts for us, and hopefully we'll have them next week. Keep your fingers crossed! And, say thanks to those teachers out there who try to teach youngsters everyday. They deserve a gold star. Especially the nuns at St. Patrick's.

when God closes a door....

When: last night, 10 pm
Who: middle-aged crazy woman & 1 HYPER dog with the poops OD'ing on vitamins
Where: bottom of the hill in the apt. complex parking lot

Yes, while I had you all out pondering last night, I was trying to get the border collie dog that I am taking care of all "pooped" out.
(Blitz, the wonder dog got hold of one of my vitamin jars and ate half of them. The emergency vet said she would be hyper, but she didn't mention the diarrhea!)
So, last night I'm out trying to get the dog to do her business, and my foot decides it's had enough. It wasn't going to walk anymore, wasn't going to support the weight, wasn't going to do ANYTHING. Where was I? At the bottom of the parking lot. Did I have my cell phone with me? Nooooooo....Did the dog care a whit about what was going on? Noooooo....so as I was being half drug by a crazed dog and half limping back to home, it suddenly occurred to me that I wouldn't have to go thru any more torture sessions at War Memorial! And while my feet were gleeful at that prospect, it really saddened me that I'm not going to be able to finish the torture program, which, even tho I whine about it, I really did look forward to every week. So now I won't get to bore you all with my bi-weekly whines....
As to a window opening whenever a door is being closed, well, I'm not sure yet what that is. I'll miss the camraderie of the fitness group and I'll miss seeing how far Miss Betty gets each week (yep, she's showing up every time!).
Where am I going with this blog? I don't know, I guess I just wanted to get my whining out of the way....So if any of you are inspired to pick up where I left off at War Memorial, please, do so. I'm sure they will welcome you with open arms. There were several newbies there this past Monday, and they all survived! And if you do go, tell Miss Betty I said hi.

Ponderings

I've been pondering all day what to blog to you all...
I did make it to War Memorial on Monday for my twice weekly torture session....then I had to sit and ponder most of the day yesterday after I left the doctor's office about why do feet give out when we don't want them to....
I thought about people we know who have had or now have the big "C". One of the nurses at the doctor's yesterday just celebrated her 5th year of being a survivor--Yeah! (I was wearing last year's RFTC shirt, so she told me she was a survivor. Real sweet lady.)
Then I pondered about tee shirts...hmm, do I tell them their shirts are ready at the tee shirt makers? Do I tell them they will get them sometime this week? hmm....
Well, if it's not raining or cloudy tonight, go out and look at the sky, and ponder about stuff. Then let me know what you pondered about.

race packets

Good Monday morning!
I hope you all had fun weekend. Now it's back to work!
I just wanted to mention that for the folks who registered ONLINE with your credit card, you should either be getting your shirt soon, or have already gotten it. If you don't receive your race packet in the next week or two at your home address, please let me know.
If you gave Wendy or me your money & registration form, those forms & $$ all went in at the same time. Those will either be mailed in one box here at the library, or I will receive notification to go pick them up.
The colors this year on the shirts are pink & plum, so plan your Race Day outfit accordingly!
Also, tonite is another date with the Fitness crew at War Memorial. It's not too late to get those sneakers laced up and ready to go.
6:30pm, remember, it's FREE!!!!
See ya!

advice from Dr. Judi

I was a slacker last night--
I didn't go walk in the Komen Fitness program. My body was not up to it, so I didn't push myself. But that doesn't mean I get to stop pushing you all to get out there and make sure you are ready for this race!
I hope you all are at least walking and getting ready for October 17th. I think your body will appreciate it if you get a little ready for the 5K. If you expect to just go from the couch to walking (or running) on Race morning, I think your body is going to want to have a word or two with you afterwards!
So remember to get some exercise between now and October 17th (which is now less than a month away), be sure to drink plenty of water, get rest, take your vitamins, and get your GOOD carbs (HINT: the Pasta Party will be on October 16th, that will be a *great* opportunity to get your carbs before the Race!) What else? volunteering at the Race Space will be another way to feel good about yourself. The boutique will open October 2nd at the Pleasant Ridge Shopping center on Hwy 10 (where it was last year). If you know of anyone who can work there on weekday afternoons, Komen is really needing volunteers for those times especially.
So, what are you supposed to do between now and October 17th?
Exercise
drink plenty of water
eat right
rest
volunteer
buy yourself a ticket to the Pasta Party
Your body will thank you for it!

help!

yep, once again I am asking for your help!
Last night, after the fitness hour was over, they mentioned that if we wanted to get a tee shirt for participating in the fitness program, to meet afterwards. We did, and we are needing a design for our shirts.
So, any of you "artistes" want a piece of fame (sorry, probably no fortune), help us design our shirts! The catch is (and you knew this was coming, right?!) is that I need it by THIS Thursday, Sept. 17th. We'd like for it to have "Fitness for the Cure" and "Making History" somewhere in it.
so come on, all you creative thinkers--whip up something fabulous for your fellow racers!
And before I paste & copy the 2nd plea for help, I will have to report that Miss Betty and I both sat on the sidelines alot last night. I didn't have any energy to totally make it thru the whole program, but I did manage to pull my middle-aged body around the field about 4 or 5 times before I called it a night. Getting old is rough!
anyway, here is the call for help from Komen--if you'd like to help, email them at the email they have listed in the letter.
Thanks! Judi

Volunteers Needed and OFFline Deadline Posted: 14 Sep 2009 09:32 AM PDTSorry to be behind in updating you. It has been crazy!
First, I wanted to remind those of you with OFFline team members that the deadline to have your packets postmarked is Wednesday, September 16. Please include SIGNED entry forms for each of your team members, your reconciliation form, the money, your spreadsheet and anything else that pertains to your team. The spreadsheet is available online or you can email me to send it to you. Your completed spreadsheet should be emailed to ar.rftc.teams@gmail.com.
The Offline Team Processing consists of three parts which we loving refer to as Data Processing, War Room and Pick Pack and Ship. Data Processing makes sure that your spreadsheet reconciles to the amount of money received, etc. We then upload that information into an Access file and run labels and reports on your team which are sent to the War Room. The War Room puts the labels on Race Bibs, pulls Pasta Party tickets, counts out coupons, etc. to prepare your team. They bag everything up along with the Team Captain Gift and the reports. Pick Pack and Ship then gets the bag to pull t-shirts, survivor hats, etc. to pack them and prepare to ship if applicable. All of this to say that many people are involved in this process and we are looking for additional volunteers.
We will begin processing your packets in Data Processing at the end of this week. This area is taken care of and no volunteers are needed. However, the War Room will begin their processing next Monday, and Pick Pack and Ship should then begin on Wednesday. Our warehouse is in the Riverdale area near the soccer fields and USA Drug's corporate offices. We work Monday through Friday evenings and as needed and available all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon. It usually takes about 2 weeks to complete all processing.
If you or your group are interested in helping us out, please contact me at ar.rftc.teams3@gmail.com. We would love the help and it's always interesting for our Team Captains to see behind the scenes as to how we process your teams. And we have lots of fun!

gold (pink?) stars

Okay--I will just come right and tell you I deserve a BIG gold (or maybe pink?) star for last night. Thursday night was Night 2 of the free Torture, er, Fitness program that Komen is sponsoring this year. I actually made it through the WHOLE program last night!
Okay, I will admit they didn't do the 5 minute walk before they started the 1st 8 minute walk, but they did add it on the end, and I stayed on course the whole time. Also, I will admit that I didn't speed up my pace during the 2nd & 3rd two minute fast walk, but I kept right on trudging around that stadium field!
Miss Betty, the 84 year old survivor, was back again last night. She made it around 2 laps before she had to go sit down. But Marty (one of the walker leaders) walked with me after she made sure Miss Betty was doing okay.
Now, after the training was over, I had to make it back to my car and drive myself back home, (I hope none of you were on the road at 7:50 last night!) then tried not to sit anywhere on any of the furniture before I had a shower. And, then I realized I still had to stand in the shower! Whoo boy! When I finally got to the couch, I didn't move for a looooooooong time. But I'll go back again, and again, and I hope you all will join me. The next session is Monday night at 6:30 at War Memorial stadium. It's **FREEEE!!****You just have to show up in comfortable clothes & walking shoes, and slog around the stadium field for a half hour. They do have speakers come in (last night was the skinniest kid I'd ever seen--he works at Easy Runner. He's been running 8 years, and you could tell he was a runner. Like I said, skinny! But he was funny and had some good info about shoes and different products.
So please come and have fun, get some exercise, and meet some new friends every Monday & Thursday. Remember, it's FREE!

aches & pains

I am tired. I am achy. But I feel good!
Last night I participated in the first ever Arkansas Komen Race for the Cure Fitness program. You should have been there! (where were YOU, anyway??!)
A few hundred of us gathered at War Memorial stadium at 6:30, where, after meeting the volunteer chair and fitness leaders, they took us out on the field where we stretched, warmed up, and started walking. and walking. and walking. That was just the warm up! Then we did 8 minutes of walking, 2 minutes of fast walking (well, some people RAN, but that's another story), then back to 8 minutes of walking, 2 minutes of speeding up, etc.
I did okay during the warm up! But I, who have not been able to walk for quite some time for any length of distance, just kept a slow pace and kept at it. Yep, I got passed up by quite a few folks several times, including my minister and her daughter, but I fell in step with a fitness leader who was walking with an older lady. Marty, the leader, and Betty, were just as nice as they could be. And I just about fell over when Betty told me she was 84 YEARS OLD, had had a double bypass and a mastectomy. I thought, my gosh, if an 84 year old can get out there and walk, well, then, I just couldn't let her outdo me! So the 3 of us walked around the field a few times, then Miss Betty had to go sit down for awhile. I continued slogging on, and then I eventually had to go rest myself. But I have to pat myself on my back--I made it almost all the way thru the training session! And I as creakingly got back in my friends' car, hot, sweaty, stinky, I felt good about what I'd just accomplished. And you know what? YOU can do the same thing! They still have spots open for the fitness program--and it's **free**. You just have to show up Mondays & Thursdays at War Memorial stadium at 6:30, and join in the fun! Go to the Komen web page, www.Komenarkansas.org, for more info or call them at 202-4399.
Happy Trails!

Sept. 10th party & other info

OMG! The Race is going to be here before we know it and there is so much going on.Next Thursday, September 10, is a Volunteer Kick-Off. This is an opportunity for volunteers to come and sign up for work shifts. It is also an opportunity for our Team Captains to come see where we process. gearing up

All right Racers--
The Komen Fitness Training Program starts this coming Monday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 pm. It will be at War Memorial Stadium. They've asked, if you have registered to train, to come a little early to turn in your waiver sheet and get your wristband. I've pasted below the tips from Komen for making the training easier and more comfortable.
Happy Trails!
Judi

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Get Fit for the Cure Expectations and Tips
What to expect from the clinic
The clinic will begin the week of September 7, Monday, and will meet twice a week through the week of Oct. 15, 2009
Meetings days will be Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 at War Memorial Stadium.
The sessions will start with a few minutes of instructions, tips and speakers on occasion. This will be followed with stretching exercises. We will start with 5 minutes walking to warm up and then go into our training program for each group. The program will last about 30 minutes, followed by cool down stretches. Plan to be there for an hour to an hour and 15 minutes at the most. You are then free to leave after the cool down, or if you have questions, the leaders will be available at that time to answer any questions or concerns you might have.
You can expect to have some pain and discomfort at first, especially if you are a beginning walker or runner. This is normal so do not let this stop you from coming to clinic sessions. You may possibly have shin splints at first, also. Your body is using muscles that you have not been using and it will hurt some, but it will go away after a few sessions. If you are already a walker and are in the beginning running group, you will probably have some pain at first because you are using different muscles to run. You need to walk or run through it, which will help to strengthen the muscles and make the pain stop. If your pain continues, even when you are not walking or running and does not go away, then you should mention this to your leader to see if there is something else going on and may possibly need to see your Doctor.
Tips to help you through your training session:
Necessary equipment
Shoes: You should have your running or walking mechanics analyzed before you purchase shoes to make sure you get in proper shoe for your arch type and running or walking style. A specialty running store's staff should be able to watch you run or walk to determine your type and running or walking style. Do not choose your shoes based on looks. The proper shoe and fit is first priority. Your running/walking shoe should be 1/2 to a full size larger than your street shoes.

Socks: You should get socks that have the moisture wicking materials that will bring the moisture to the top of the sock so it can evaporate. Cotton socks start rubbing and cause friction that can cause blisters when they get wet.
Bras: You should have a good supportive sports bra that eliminates bounce when you walk or run. While in the dressing room, jog up and down to see if most of the bounce is eliminated.

Other things to make running and walking more pleasant:
These are niceties that you can reward yourself with as you reach certain goals.
Tops and bottoms: It is best to stay away from cotton as when it gets wet and heavy it can cause chaffing. You will stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer is shorts, pants, tights and tops that are made of moisture wicking materials such as coolmax, dry it, dry release, etc. These should be worn next to your body so they will bring moisture to the top of the shirt over the technical shirt and it will take the moisture to the outer layer, keeping you dry and warmer. The technical clothing is more expensive, but it lasts forever.
Headbands and Gloves: These are items that will also help to keep you warmer in colder weather. It is better to get these in the moisture wicking material as when you and your hands sweat, for example, your hands will be wet and they will get cold if the material does not wick away the moisture.
Reflective Clothing: It is most important to wear some reflective clothing or vest or safety lights when running or walking in the dark so that cars will be able to see you. You should also run or walk facing the traffic.
Identification: Do not go for a walk, especially alone, without having some type of identification on you in case of emergency. There are dog tag type IDs that you can wear or fasten on your shoes that work well for runner and walkers.

hellloooooooo!

Hello all of our lovely Racers--
Have you missed us??? We've not written ANYTHING since last week. I don't know about Wendy, but I know I'm slowing down! I guess that's what happens when you're 357 in dog years.....

Updates-updates-updates!
We have turned in the team tee shirt order for **32** shirts! yeah! This library will be covered in pink and purple pretty soon!
We are really excited about getting them--and we hope you are too.

Komen finally emailed the spreadsheet to turn in our team registration today, so we will get that taken care of this afternoon.
Komen will still take online registrations up to Oct. 2nd, I believe, and people will still be able to register in person at the race space up to Oct. 16th.

I (Judi) have turned in our team's Race Space volunteer info to Komen--and sent an email to the ones who signed up to volunteer on Oct. 6th or Oct. 8th. If you sent me an email about volunteering, but haven't gotten a reply back from me, PLEASE let me know so we can add your name to the list.
We want to thank all of you who volunteered for the Race Space, so everyone give a BIG shout out to:
Wanda, Margie, Debbie, Crystal, Elizabeth D, Tina, Abbie, Karm, Wendy, and Barbara D!
Thank you Ladies--you are very appreciated! (we hope you know that, tho!)

Remember, if you have a hunky man who wants to help out with Three Miles of Men, whisper some sweet nothings in his ear and get him registered quickly!! Or, if you know of someone who has a great talent for entertaining people, have them volunteer to entertain the runners/walkers along the race route on Oct. 17th. Komen will appreciate their efforts--and who knows, they may get filmed by one of the TV stations, which may get picked up by the national news, YouTube,CNN, and they may become FAMOUS!! (just a thought!)
Once again, we could not be doing this without your generous support, so give yourselves a big shout out as well!
You are AWESOME!!!
Pinkingly yours,
Your Co-Captains
Wendy & Judi
